Kits, gate coverage, captain training and the return to work. This is the operation, not the posting calendar.
Not legal advice. Confirm before any stoppage.
This page is not a national strike manual and it does not start a strike. Confirm the Act, your constitution, and your union’s strike protocol with your staff representative before any work stoppage. Local executive and the strike committee decide. This page does not.
Officer Learning module
Module 7 expands this strike playbook with picket and return-to-work scenarios, a self-test, and take-to-meeting sheets.
Mobilizer & Bargaining PartnerIf two officers are running two different strikes
Stop. Name one committee, write the jobs down, and tell captains who is in charge before the next gate opens.
| Job | Who decides | Not this person |
|---|---|---|
| Local executive | Political yes and no: start, settle, return. | Cannot delegate the decision to a group chat. |
| Strike committee | Runs the day: gates, rotations, hardship, the standing brief. | Does not report to the Facebook group. |
| Picket captains | Run a named gate from the brief. | Do not negotiate with the employer at the fence. |
| Spokesperson | Public voice, after captains have the facts. | Captains do not give interviews. |
Takeaway
If a reporter, a manager, or a member asks a question you do not own, send them to the named person. Silence plus a name beats a guess.
If captains still need the president to open a gate, you are not ready. Finish the brief before you finish the graphic.
Takeaway
If the tote is still in someone's trunk at 5:45, the gate opens empty. Pack the night before. Put the tote in the car that is opening the gate.
Example. Twenty-four members, a twelve-hour day, three-hour shifts. That is four shift slots, so six people on the sidewalk at once. Staff the live gate at four and a skeleton side door at two. Do not pretend you have three full lines.
| Band | On the sidewalk at once | Layout |
|---|---|---|
| Thin (about 8 to 12) | 4 to 6 at a time if you rotate | One main gate, two-hour rotations, skeleton on the one side door that is actually used. |
| Working (about 20 to 30) | 8 to 12 at a time | Main gate plus one side. Lunch covered. Move people the same hour onto the live door. |
| Deep (40 or more) | 16 or more at a time | Every mapped entrance at shift change. Keep a reserve for the door that opens late. |
Do not pretty-staff an empty main while the dock is the real door. Move people the same hour.
This is coverage of a lawful picket
Your staff representative confirms where you may stand. This is not a wildcat, not a blockade, and not advice to occupy property. A department that walks without a mandate puts members at legal risk.
Takeaway
If the notice at the gate disagrees with the strike page, members will trust neither. Fix the brief, then copy it out.
| Who they meet | What they say |
|---|---|
| A member arriving | Gate name, shift length, washroom, hardship path from the brief. Thank them. Ask who else on their shift is coming. |
| Someone approaching the gate | This is a lawful picket. Please do not cross. Here is a flyer with the facts and the local page. If they insist, do not chase the vehicle. Note the time for the committee. |
| A manager at the fence | Please speak with our spokesperson. Here is the name and number from the brief. Captains do not negotiate terms at the fence. |
| A reporter | The spokesperson is named on the brief. Captains do not give interviews or let cameras bait a dare. |
| An ally or visiting local | Check in with this captain. Named gate only. Follow our brief. Do not speak for this local. |
| Captain call | Line responds | When |
|---|---|---|
| Fair contract now | Fair contract now | Arrival and shift change, one demand. |
| Who does the work? | We do. | When the line needs energy, not a speech. |
| Together we stand | Together we win | End of a rotation, not over a confrontation. |
The captain starts. One person, one demand. Stop if a camera is baiting a dare, if replacement workers are being baited, or if the chant slides into a slur. Do not paste someone else's anthem. Write three lines your local can own.
Print a stack with the same gate names, hardship path, and a QR code to the local strike page. Flyer Maker and QR Link Cards build that on a personal device. Website Template is the page the QR should open if you do not already have one.
If a captain cannot say the hardship path without looking at a phone, they are not trained yet. Read it out loud the night before.
Takeaway
If the group is loud and the sidewalk is empty, stop posting and start calling the people who are missing.
Never invent amounts or dates
A promise the local cannot keep empties the line faster than employer flyers. If you do not know, say who will find out.
Injunctions and legal letters
Stop improvising. Forward the letter. Wait for legal guidance from your staff representative. A clever post is not a defence.
A van of sandwiches at a named gate beats a solidarity graphic with no address.
Takeaway
Ask which gate, what time, what they need. Then show up as labour, not as a tour.
If the group chat is louder than the line, you are feeding the wrong room. Brief captains, then publish once.
Same facts as the notice at the gate. Confirm the Act and your union's strike protocol with your staff representative before any stoppage.
Takeaway
Keep the hardship contact live for a while after return. Money questions do not end when the fence comes down.
Captains on the side stair or dock thirty minutes before first management cars. The main door can wait. The hole cannot.
Backup captain opens the named gate from the paper brief. Committee lead is told once, not in a group thread of twenty.
Move to the indoor fallback already on the brief. Same gate name. Do not invent a new location in a chat that night staff will miss.
Captain collects one copy for the committee. Members are told to ignore it until the official note. Nobody debates the flyer with a manager at the fence.
Captain gives the hardship facts from the brief: who decides, how to ask, when an answer comes. No invented amount.
Ten minutes: weather move, flyer in the file, hardship script unchanged. Then one public note with the same facts. Captains already have them.
Rotations hold. Rumours go to the huddle, not the comments. Media is sent to the spokesperson.
Resolve it on the line and in committee, then publish once. A morning of posts is a morning you were not running the gate.
Takeaway
The fix is almost always the same: one committee, one brief, captains first, then one public note.
