Command, the picket line, member care, and return to work — not a posting calendar
Not legal advice. Confirm before any stoppage.
This page is not a national strike manual and it does not start a strike. Confirm the Act, your constitution, and your union’s strike protocol with your Staff Representative before any work stoppage. Local executive and the strike committee decide. This page does not.
Officer Learning module
Module 6 expands this playbook with scenarios, a self-test, floor checklists, and printable take-to-meeting sheets.
Building Collective Power →Use this playbook when a lawful strike or lockout is live or hours away. Other jobs live on other pages so members get the right help.
If two officers are running two different strikes
Stop. Name one committee, write the jobs down, and tell captains who is in charge before the next gate opens.
Write names before the first gate opens. On a small local one person may hold two jobs. Two people must not hold the same job.
Takeaway
If a reporter, a manager, or a member asks a question you do not own, send them to the named person. Silence plus a name beats a guess.
The test is simple: can captains open a gate at 06:00 without calling the president for the washroom key.
Takeaway
If captains still need the president to open a gate, you are not ready. Finish the brief before you finish the graphic.
The line is where the local is visible. Treat it like a meeting with weather, not a photo backdrop.
Takeaway
If the notice at the gate disagrees with the strike page, members will trust neither. Fix the brief, then copy it out.
Turnout is a relationship job, not a posting job. People come because someone they trust asked, and they stay because the line is livable.
Members will ask about money on day one. Answer with who decides, how to ask, and when to expect an answer — never with a number you cannot pay.
Never invent amounts or dates
A promise the local cannot keep empties the line faster than employer flyers. If you do not know, say who will find out.
Emergency first, communications second. This is not a security manual. De-escalate, get people safe, then tell the named officers.
Injunctions and legal letters
Stop improvising. Forward the letter. Wait for legal guidance from your Staff Representative. A clever post is not a defence.
Other locals, community groups, and elected officials can help the line and the hardship path. They are not a substitute for members at the gate.
Captains need facts as often as the facts change, including “nothing changed.” The public needs one official place to look, updated when something actually changed.
Takeaway
If the group chat is louder than the line, you are feeding the wrong room. Brief captains, then publish once.
The graphic coming down is not the end. The first shifts back are when retaliation shows up and rumours about “who won” start.
Takeaway
Keep the hardship contact live for a while after return. Money questions do not end when the fence comes down.
The legal window opened overnight. Members are arriving in the dark. This is operations, not a press day.
Takeaway
Resolve it on the line and in committee, then publish once. A morning of posts is a morning you were not running the gate.
These failures are more common than a bad graphic. Watch for them from day one.
Takeaway
The fix is almost always the same: one committee, one brief, captains first, then one public note.
Keep jobs separate so members get the right playbook.
